Tailoring is primary profession in World of Warcraft and is not restricted to any class.

However cloth wearers such as Mages, Warlocks, and Priests are more likely to persue tailoring as they can create these items for themselves. Being a tailor alows you to make items wherever you are as you do not need any special equipment, so as long as you have the recipe ingredients.

You can make items such as special bags which are sought after by every class as everyone needs bags to store items, eg. herbalism (increase carry capacity), shirts - some of the popular selling shirts are Dark Silk and Rich Purple Silk, dresses, tuxedo's (maybe for a wedding). These clothing items are to make ones character look a little better. Some of these clothes you make are sought after on the auction house so you can make some gold as well by selling these.

Where do you source your recipe items? Cloth the main ingredient can be found by killing/looting various humanoids. Other items needed for the recipes might be leather- from a skinner, Gems - mining, fishing, drops or potions from an alchemist etc... Remember to look at the auction house as most items can be bought at a price though. So if you need gold checkout this guide for more gold than you will ever need.

Some players choose enchanting with tailoring as well as it levels up your enchanting easier and quickly by disenchanting some of the items you have made through tailoring. You can choose skinning as well to collect the leather its really up to you which you prefer.

In the Burning Crusade expansion when you reach level 350 you can choose a tailoring specialization such as spellcloth, shadowcloth, and primal mooncloth. The benefit is that when you make a respective cloth item, you create two items of cloth for only using 1 batch of materials and cooldown. Cooldowns are waiting periods of +- 4 days you need to wait before making the specific items again. So you basically are doubling your cloth making output.

Here is a guideline for the different specializations:

Spellfire Tailoring - Arcane/Fire damage items, 28-slot enchanting bag (Fire/Arcane Mage)
Shadowweave Tailoring - Frost/Shadow damage items, 28-slot soul shard bag (Frost Mage/Warlock/Shadow Priest)
Primal Mooncloth Tailoring - Healing, 20-slot bag (Holy Priest)

When you reach Grand Master Tailoring, you can again choose out of 3 tailoring specializations. Spellweave, ebonweave, or moonshroud.

Right. Now a basic guide to level up...
